Honoring Ellen Keeter’s legacy through CREW Network Foundation scholarships

Ellen Powell
Ellen Powell Oast Keeter of CREW Coastal Virginia passed away in November 2021 after a long and hard fought 17-year battle with breast cancer. Ellen was a courageous leader, mentor, friend and professional. We will cherish her memory and her many contributions to commercial real estate and the community.

Ellen was highly regarded in commercial real estate finance, but was also well known as a community service leader.   She began her banking career with First & Merchant's Bank (which eventually became Bank of America) and was retained through many mergers and acquisitions. Ellen eventually joined the TowneBank family as a commercial loan officer.  Ellen was a Senior Vice President at TowneBank and was dedicated to serving her clients and the community.

She continued her commitment to the industry through her leadership in CREW Coastal Virginia, which included serving several years on the Board of Directors and as a Delegate to CREW Network.  Ellen also served as the CREW Network Foundation Chapter Champion for Coastal Virginia, and was passionate about supporting women in commercial real estate.  Given Ellen’s passion for CREW and for helping others, the establishment of this memorial gifting is to honor Ellen’s memory and to continue her efforts to positively impact others for years to come.

“Ellen was an inspiring leader, friend, mentor, mother, banker and human. One of her mantras was to ‘make memories’, and Ellen made memories every day that will not be forgotten. She led by example and walked the talk.  Ellen always chose a smile on her face, even in the face of adversity. Working with her professionally, with CREW, and personally was an enormous joy and I will miss her dearly. I’m so grateful for everything she gave to CREW and to us!” - Alyssa Carducci Dangler, Partner at Williams Mullen

“Ellen was one of the most gracious people that I have ever known. She had joy in her heart, and a smile for everyone.  Ellen was always welcoming, and was one of the first people I met when I joined CREW.  She had a true passion for service, and helping others. Though she never took no for an answer, she was always warm and genuine when she persuaded you to say yes. She was an amazing role model for all of us in the banking community, and I will remember her always for her positive attitude and kindness. We lost a good one, and she will be missed.” –Bonnie Stretz, 2021 CREW Coastal Virginia President and SVP Atlantic Union Bank

"Ellen supported me when I started my own design firm. Not only was she our banker, but she was a friend and mentor to our team. She checked in on us often and her guidance and inquiries into our wellbeing were always genuine. I will miss her smile and her friendship." -Kristi Barker, Associate and Interior Design Team Lead at Woolpert

“Ellen was a wonderful, positive and uplifting person. She was always so helpful and supportive. She was a true role model and mentor.  I hope her family knows what a lasting impact she has had on all of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be missed.” -Lisa M. Murphy, Willcox & Savage, P.C.
