This is city planning at its best. After military budget cuts forced the closure of the United States’ third largest Naval Training Center in 1995, the City of Orlando and its development partner, The Pritzker Group, embarked on a visionary base reuse plan which culminated in a Planned Development Ordinance that created over 300,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, 660,000 sq. ft. of office space, 250,000 sq. ft. of civic space and over 4,500 dwelling units. Tour the town center and parks while city leaders share the challenges faced in turning an abandoned base into a thriving community. Learn about the challenges faced, including buried munitions, toxic chemicals, a slow real estate market and the hurdles of placing a new urbanism concept community smack in the middle of some of Orlando’s most traditional communities.
