Remember as a child negotiating with your mother about bedtime? Pleading with her to stay up for just 10 more minutes? Or negotiating with your dad about getting the car keys if you promised to help with the yard work the following weekend?
Even in marriage (especially in marriage!) we are negotiating. As a newlywed (many years ago), I remember negotiating with my husband that if I cooked dinner, he would clean up. That lasted until we had kids and then they had to clean up—no negotiation!
Negotiation is in all aspects of our lives. We negotiate with co-workers on projects, we negotiate with friends about the dinner check … we even negotiate with ourselves about having another glass of wine — if we promise to go to the gym the next morning! Sometimes we don’t realize how much negotiation is intrinsic in our daily work and conversations. I had a boss who once said, “everything is negotiable.” He was always looking for the best deal. Not a bad way to think.
In commercial real estate, there’s no doubt that negotiation is a critical part of every business deal. Being at the top of your game is vital to your success. That’s why attending the negotiation workshop at the CREW Network Spring Leadership Summit in Toronto is crucial. You’ll learn from industry leader George Pincus about preparing to negotiate, leading a negotiation and getting the best deal you can.
I hope to see you in Toronto June 22-23. No negotiation necessary ... you will win with this workshop!
